A rugby team from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, NZ visited Springfield in the fall of 1989. The game was played on November 18th and the result was a draw 21-21.

Located on the east coast of South Island, its rugby team is a powerhouse in NZ rugby. Over the clubs history, this club has had many representative honors including 23 All Blacks, 21 Black Ferns, 162 NZ Universities (men), 161 Canterbury A (men), 65 Canterbury A (women) and 6 Canterbury Crusaders' players (professional team).
