FAQ
Q: How much does it cost to play rugby?
A: It’s fairly cheap. New player clinics and practices are free. Please come and try rugby at any time, at no cost.
Before you play in a match, you’ll need to register and pay a fee to USA Rugby. This group governs all adult rugby in the USA, and you must register with them, along with paying a fee that can also provide some supplemental insurance if you were to get hurt. You can pay a smaller fee for a single week’s worth of coverage, or a single fee for the whole year from August-August.
Our rugby club asks players to pay dues, to pay for all of our costs—maintaining our fields, paying referees and trainers. If it’s your first season, you’re excused from dues. After that, club dues are $100 for each season ($100 for Spring, $100 for Fall). We can help you out with IOU’s along the way if needed. We don’t want the cost to deter anyone from playing.
Q: What kind of clothing or equipment do I need?
A: Rugby requires almost no specialized gear. For practices, you’ll need to wear clothes you’d exercise in, which are comfortable for the temperature outside (shorts, pants, t-shirts, sweatshirts). Cleats for football or soccer are ideal footwear, please don’t wear the baseball version with metal spikes. You can also wear tennis shoes, until you acquire cleats. We have cleats to loan new players. You’ll also want to wear a mouthpiece before you begin contact drills.
Q: What are the age requirements?
A: Both men’s and women’s clubs have an age requirement of 18+. If you’re 17, you can play after you have a waiver of consent signed by your legal guardian. We do not have youth teams yet. Check back in the spring of 2026 as we hope to have a youth team by then. Please Email us at springfieldrugbyfootballclub@gmail.com if you’re interested in the youth club. We’ll put you on the list.
Q: What is the schedule?
A: Rugby has two main seasons, spring and fall. Fall training for both teams starts Tuesday, August 5th and will run till late October when our match schedule is finished. Spring season training starts in February and will run till late in April. Trainings are at the Springfield Rugby Pitch every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 - 7:30 PM. You do not need to make every training to be on the team. Show up when you can and you’ll play rugby. We recognize people have families, jobs, school, and other responsibilities. Matches are on Saturdays around 1:00 PM and we will sometimes travel to cities like St. Louis, Kansas City, Fayetteville, or even Wichita to play. Attendance at every event or training is not required but the more you show up, the better you’ll do, and the more you will play.
In the summers, we play a slightly different version of rugby, called 7s. We have a similar training schedule, but our competitions are single day tournaments held on Saturdays across the area. 7s is a great opportunity to try out rugby or gain more experience.
